Soccer Rules!

On Tuesday, the grade 5's and grade 6's from Langham went to Dalmeny to take part in the annual Wild West Soccer Tournament. This is a day to promote health, team work and good sportsmanship. Our grade 5's were divided into 3 teams while the grade 6's were all on their own team. Each team played 5 games, and in the end we all had a blast!

One of the highlights was the huge game at the end when the grade 5's battled the grade 6's in an epic battle of two ball soccer. With 55 kids running around after 2 soccer balls, there was a lot of mayhem, but a lot of laughter too!

Days like that remind me how lucky I am to be working with wonderful kids like this. There was not one instance when a student had to be pulled off the field for poor sportsmanship. We represented LES very well, and I was beaming with pride :)

West Coast Tales By 5M

The grade 5M's are currently writing short stories set in British Columbia. These stories are fictional accounts of trips to BC. Read to learn more...but be aware, some of them are very scary.

Human to pickle

One spring day in 1987, two young girls, Alice and Jane, went to a carnival in B.C. to see a gypsy.
When they got there the gypsy said“Three minutes after you leave this tent a giant mutant pickle will attack you!!!!”When she finished talking they laughed long and loud.
After they were done laughing they left the tent. Three minutes later they saw a giant mutant pickle coming to attack.
Alice and Jane ran as fast as they could but the pickle caught up to them in no time and knocked them out. Then he took them to the pickle leader in Pickle Town and the leader turned them into,,,,,,, PICKLES!?!?!?!?!

Survival in the rockys

Coming home from a guys fishing trip in the rocky Mountains, the pilot says “we are losing altitude, WE ARE GOING DOWN!” The planes wings clipped the treetops, crashed into more trees and finally stopped when it was hanging between two really big trees.
I must have been unconscious for awhile, I looked around to see if everyone was o.k. Some were still unconscious, but Aidan M, Aidan C and Logan were starting to wake up.
We checked ourselves over for broken bones, except for a few cuts and bruises, we seemed to be o.k. We checked on the other passengers and the pilot, but sadly they had not survived the crash.
We were very sad that they had died, but we knew that we had to get out of the plane quickly and to a safer place.
The only way to get out of the plane was to climb onto the wing and down the tree, but first we made sure that we grabbed the flare guns, blankets, matches and the first aid kit. Once we found a safe spot away from the plane, we set up camp for the night.
The next morning we woke up to the sound of helicopters. I immediately fired the flare guns. They saw the flares and within the hour we were being airlifted into the helicopter and off to the hospital.
We were still sad for those who had died in the crash, but very thankful that we were alive to see our family and friends again.

Mythical Creatures by?????

One day two boys named Logen and Jordan. Jordan said,” lets go to British Columbia.” Ok said Logen. “I will call an airplane tomorrow at 2:00.” Jordan said,” I’m going to bed” “
Me to said “Logen and he went to sleep. The next day Logen woke up at 1:30 were going to be late.” I forgot he lived beside the airport.
I got into the airport and I saw Jordan and we ran up the escalator. I said, “we made it we had to pay $2 each. The pilot said the yeti is on the loose but I didn’t believe him. We got on the plane and Jordan met blood and the tube popped.
It was only a big fish that drew blood and the ocopogo.
I pulled Jordan up and the ocopogo attacked the boat. We washed up o an island. Two monsters took us to a mountain we woke up and the yeti, Bigfoot, nessie and the ocopogo surrounded us. an avalanche started Jordan and I got away but nessie, Bigfoot, Yeti and ocopogo didn’t.

THE B.C TRIP

My mom and dad drove Britney Amy Melanie and I to b. c When we got there we got in our swimming suites. And ran to the lake as we could as fast as we could. Once we got there it was to cold outside so we went to our house. It took forever to get warm outside. Than we went swimming at the lake.
We swam so far we couldn’t find our way back.. Than we seen some sharks. Than there was a boat floating right ahead of us. We went in side of the boat and found way back..

Skydiving

We went skydiving in Prince Albert, my home town. As soon we knew it we jumped and landed in New York. While we were there we went shopping. AFTER WE WERE DONE WE WENT BACK TO THE PLANE TO JUMP AGAIN BUT THIS TIME WE LANDED IN B.C. MY HOME TOWN (SHHHHHHHHHHHHH BE QUITE WERE TRYING TO TELL A STORY )< Anyway we landed in B.C. by the woods. We walked for a little while and as soon as we knew it we smelled something n guess what < a skunk spade us! We ran away to a safer place but that place was not safe either there was a family of racoons. The mom came and attracts us! WE were a mess so we ran again but we ran into a bear. “run for life” I screamed after a while we got tired so we lad down for the night .in the morning we were surrounded by animals all the animals jumped on us and we thought we were going to die but a man in black killed all the animals .He helped us up, and when he looked at us he screamed like a girl and ran away. WE were trying to find our way out. Finally we found the city and lived there. But at the end we died happily the end

When Bailey and I were done a soccer game it was 10:35. We were going home down the ally. Bailey saw this man and we thought it might be Jack the Bad or Jack the Nerd. So we walked a little faster. I turned a round and he was not there. I said hey Bailey and she was not there. And then I heard a truck it was Robert the trucker. He said “jump in the truck I’ll take you to find Bailey”
“OKAY” I said. Three minutes later I spotted Bailey. I went and grabbed her and said “where is he?” Then I saw him knocked out Bailey had a glass bottle. That old man only wanted a kid but what ever anyway he got sent to prison. When the police came Bailey and I went home with Robert and his daughter Jayden and his son Tyson they are twins!!!
That was all .

Surviving from sharks

Madison

It was just me, Brooke, Elizabeth and Rachel Jordan, Melanie and Britney sitting on the airplane to British Columbia. Elizabeth said” we should get to the hotel and go to the beach and go get smoothes”. So we all agreed on what we were going to do.

We got to the hotel and put our suitcases on the beds and went straight out the door to get smoothes. I had a banana and strawberry smoothie so did Britney, Melanie and Jordan have the same but Rachel, Elizabeth and Brooke each had strawberry kiwi.
After that Brooke said” we should go on a boat ride”. So we did. We were not that far from shore when we hit a rock. The boat was sinking so everyone jumped off of the boat but Brooke, Elizabeth, Rachel, Melanie, Jordan, Britney and I didn’t jump off because the had stopped sinking . Sharks came around and ate everyone except for this little boy so I said” give me your hand”. So he gave me his hand and I pulled him up.
Brooke said,” hey you guys we aren’t that far from shore the sharks are to busy eating the other people so we have to swim back to shore.” So we did swim back to the shore safely and this little boy had no parent because the sharks ate them so the little boy came home with us

THE OCOPO

One day my mom told me that I and two friends could come to her Cabin. In BC so I went to Jordan’s house. And he said yes so I went to Brayden’s house and he said yes. Then we went to my house and we tried to figure out how to get there and then we found how to much it $700 L to fly to BC so we put some money but we toke the money to the bank.
And we headed to BC with no money so we hade to keep going when we got there at 4:00 in the morning we where so tired we went start to bed.When we woke up we went fishing and we got skunkt we went to the cabin and we said we are going out again and fish and we did Colton cot a fish we brought it in and. IT WAS THE OCOPO it knocked us off the boat we got back on and let it go .

THE WORLD ENDS TODAY

Once upon a time there where 3 friends who always wanted to go sail boating on the ocean. One day they went to Victoria to sail over the seas.
They were 3 miles out at sea when they could see a huge storm coming their way. They tied everything down and got ready for the storm. Five minutes later the storm was right over them. Than they could feel the wind pick up and Logan yelled “everyone get into the cabin!”
“What?” yelled Rachel N.
I yelled, “get in the cabin!”
“Ok!”
They all went rushing into the cabin and sat down huffing and puffing.
A couple of seconds later Rachel remembered that she left the compass on the prow. She went running up to the prow and a big gust of wind blew her over and the compass went flying into the water.
She came running down the stairs to the cabin and yelled “guys!”
“What” said Logan?
“The compass huhhu it’s gone.”
“How?” I asked.
“There was a big gust of wind that blew me over than the compass went flying into the water.”
I said, “it’s ok, it’s not your fault.”
Logan said “don’t you see, it’s all her falt.”
“Be quiet Logan” I yelled in his face.
Than all of a sudden there was a giant flash of light and not a second later the storm ended. We all stopped dead and walked slowly to the main deck. I said “where is all the land? I could see it 5 minutes ago.”
“You are right” said Logan and Rachel at the same time.
I said “the world has ended at long last.”
I said “we are going to die any way so I am just going to jump in the water. Bye guys.” I jumped into the water and drowned.
Than Rachel and Logan got married and had kids.

Saving a Species

One day I decided to go to Vancouver with Lily and Katie. We rented a lime green mustang convertible with purple pock-a-dots.
Finally we arrived. We stayed the night in the Sea Bird Hotel right beside the ocean. The next morning we rented a big motor boat and went to the middle of the ocean. We saw a huge fishing boat with a lot of men aboard the boat. They pulled a net up. There was no fish, but then Lily saw a dolphin in the net. It looked different. Then the brains, Katie, said it was a spinner blue nose. The men holding the net let it go, started their motor and drove away.
We went over to the dolphin, I was taking a vet course before we went to B.C. so I grabbed the first aid kit. It took half an hour to patch the dolphin up. We put it back in the water and it swam away happy and free.
When we got back to shore we realized that a camera man had bean taping us and we went on live T.V. It had bean the best trip ever and we had saved a species because it was the last female spinner blue nose left in the wild.

The story of B. C

Once upon a time in 2017 Riley, Amy and Logan L went to the airport and flew to B .c. It took a week to get there. After they landed they went to get a hotel. The next morning Riley and Logan got a job Logan .L worked at Purolator, and Riley worked at Wal-Mart and Amy stayed at the hotel. Every day Logan did everything at the hotel and did cleaning, laundry and taking out the trash.
The next day our moms and dads phoned and wanted us to return, but we couldn’t because we were far away from the airport and nobody had their driver’s license.
So the next day they got their driver’s license Amy was a better driver than Riley and Logan so Amy got to drive so They went for a drive to the airport then within five kilometres the car broke down and we had to run the rest of the way. We couldn’t miss our flight! So we ran there was one minute left so we ran as fast as our legs could carry us! We got to the airplane just in time. It went back to Saskatoon, at 3:00 am. We got home to our moms and dads and they threw a big party for returning.

The Shadow man

We were getting out of the plane when this man said, “You are the 50th family to get out of this plane. You get a free camera.” We were so happy we screamed.
My name is Bailey and my family came on a vacation to Williams Lake, B.C. We came hear with my friend kaitlyn.
We found a nice hotel to stay in and rented two rooms. One for me and kaitlyn and one for my mom and dad. It had a pool, buffet, spa and gym. I only went to the buffet and pool though. It was the best hotel I have ever seen it was called Keep Out There is Waterslides. It did not get that much customers but it was still good.
The next morning Kaitlyn and I were walking around poking our nose in stuff and testing our new camera out. When we saw a man through the lens. Then we looked on the wall of the alley and there was a poster that said Shadow Man Wanted. The man on the poster looked exactly like the man we were filming.
We hid behind a trash can and kept on filming. He was trying to brake into a house. He got into the house and we herd some one scream.
After we went back to hotel and told my mom and dad “we just taped a criminal that has never been taped before called the Shadow man.” My mom and dad called the police and told them about the shadow man.
The next day news reporters came and gave us an interview. While we were getting our interview the Shadow man was watching that cannel. He found out that we taped him.
The next day the Shadow man arrived at our door with an axe. I slammed the door in his face and shouted “SHADOW MAN.” We ran out the back and ran down the stairs. We jumped into the car and drove away. I looked out the back window and I saw him running after the car. It had been 2 Days since The shadow we were almost home and we were starving. 2 hours passed and we were home and we never spoke of it again. Until day when we were watching the news and they said they found a dead man on the side of the road near a little town called Langham. Then my dad said “Good thing we don’t have to worry about him any more.”

The West Coast

We are going to read a story called Tides of Change and the kids need to recall a time they visited the west coast. If they have never been there, they need to think of something they'd love to see if they were lucky enough to make the trip.

Haiku Poetry

The grade 5's were learing about haiku poems today. Please enjoy their work :)

She's Baaaaaack!

It was so nice to hear the positive words from the staff and students when I arrived at school today. You see, I was at a meeting and didn't get to school until 11:30. My sub today was Mrs. K, and the students were so excited about that. Mrs. K (for those of you who don't know) retired last year and many of my 5M's were in her class. She commented that it was just like old times and the kids were as great as ever. I learned a lot from Mrs. K while she was here, and I'm so happy she is willing to come back and sub.

It's very important to have people in your lives that you can turn to for advice, Mrs. K was always one of those people. Students, if I asked you who you could turn to for advice, whose name would you come up with? Feel free to respond if you like, if not, just think about it. Life is way too tough to make it through without help from others. Remember, it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help, it is a sign of maturity and wisdom.

Time Vocabulary

Today in ELA we discussed how authors tell readers what time it is in their story. For example, in Tarma the author used phrases like, at dusk, in April, earlier in the day. After discussing this, the students were given a task to create a paragraph that followed a time line. Each student received the same frame work and were allowed to complete it with their own original ideas.

Tarma....the story

We are going to read a story called Tarma in ELA. This story is about two Peruvian children who spend a very special Easter in the Andes mountains.

In ELA class on Wednesday we spent some time searching the internet for information on Peru. The kids found out where Peru is and some cool facts. Hopefully some of them post some info in the comment section below :)

But! No guinea pig talk.

More than Cookies and Coffee

While the students enjoyed an extra long weekend and some glorious weather, the teachers were hard at work. Today we focussed on reading comprehension and looked at how we will use the tools we have access to in our division. I'm writing about this not to justify why kids were not in school, but to emphasize the hard work being done by the teachers at LES. The conversations we had about how to ensure that every child under our watch succeeds was so uplifting. I marvelled at the power of collaboration and kept repeating one of my favourite phrases in my head, we are smarter than me.

After lunch all the teachers from Prairie Spirit School Division met in Warman for the launch of a new school year. We were encouraged and motivated by several different speakers; from the PSSD Board Chair to the PSTA President to our new PSSD Director of Education. There was a common theme that came through all of the speaches, teachers make a difference and what we are doing is extremely important. One of my favourite moments was recognizing staff member in the division who have reached 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 year milestones. I am always amazed when I see the dedication these people have towards their students. I hope I'm as energized and enthusiatic when I reach those lofty milestones.

So while the students were re-living a few final moments of summer, the teachers were hard at work and yes....they even enjoyed a few cookies and some coffee :)

Learnin' How To Blog

This morning we read a poem called All the Colors of the Earth and this poem was about the different colors children can be but how we are all alike. "I thought the poem was really good because it would suck if everyone was one color" said Elliot G. Amy felt it "was a really good poem because it told me people can look different but inside they are the same". "I liked it because all the colors and how people of the earth are all the same" said Gabe, Kaitlyn said "I like it because it doesn't make people feel left out because they are different skin color than someone else."

Trissa liked it because "everything in the poem was a little different". Elizabeth's favourite line was the very first one that said, Children come in all colors of the Earth. Madison loved the line Children come with hair like bouncy baby lambs, while Bailey liked the line For love comes in cinnamon, walnut and wheat.

First Day!

Such a great day with the new grade 5 students! It was amazing to hear the stories of a wonderful summer spent travelling with family and friends....although there were a lot of kids who said they saw bears over the break.
Our opening assembly at 12:45 centered around the school as a sailboat and how important it is for all of us to work together to ensure smooth sailing. So far I've been very impressed with my students and their willingness to work together so everyone succeeds. We are very glad to welcome Elliot G to our class this year and I'm really happy with how well he has fit in....new friends already!
We worked on some math facts, spelling and grammar today. I think everyone is wiped out though....summer holidays will do that to ya!

Getting Ready for 2011/2012

Sitting in the empty classroom looking at all the desks organized so neatly and reviewing the plans laid out before me I'm getting excited. Right now there is a stage, and slowly it is being set, but what is missing are the players. That will all change on Aug. 31st as my new class shows up for another school year. I know I have my goals in mind....I wonder what theirs will be?

This year we will challenge ourselves to learn in new ways. How can we use technology to answer some of our questions? How can we reach out to connect with students outside of our building? How can we collaborate as a group to ensure everyone experiences success? How can we make sure we build on our strengths and focus less on our weaknesses?

It will be a fun year full of new adventures, missteps and growth.
